Microsoft’s classic Notepad application is receiving a major upgrade with the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) features, starting with the new "Rewrite" functionality. Windows Insiders can now access this experimental tool, allowing users to enhance their text with AI-driven suggestions right inside Notepad.

With Rewrite, users can select any text in Notepad, right-click, and choose options to rephrase, change the tone, or adjust the length of their writing. A pop-up dialog offers suggestions for making the text longer, more formal, or more concise. Users can then replace the original text with these AI-generated revisions with a single click, making it easy to refine and polish their content.

Interestingly, the feature comes with full user control: if desired, users can disable Rewrite to keep Notepad’s interface as simple and classic as ever.

Microsoft Paint Joins the AI Revolution

Notepad isn’t the only tool receiving AI enhancements. Microsoft Paint is set to feature its own AI-powered tools, including "Generative Fill" for adding visual effects and "Generative Erase" for removing unwanted elements in images. These updates bring a modern edge to Microsoft’s long-standing applications, promising new levels of creativity and productivity.

It’s impressive to see how quickly AI is transforming even the most iconic and simple applications. While Notepad took nearly four decades to gain a spell-check option, AI is now poised to redefine its capabilities in just a few months.
